Accounting Major

Accounting is an information system that represents the economic resources and responsibilities of business or non-business enterprises. Monitored over time, it is used as a decision-making tool for allocating resources and evaluating responsibilities.

Accounting information affects major economic decisions that have national and international impacts. The accounting program teaches analytical, theoretical, communication, and leadership skills necessary for effective accounting and advancement in public, private, and government careers.

The program prepares students to become accountants in business and government by providing accounting, business, and liberal education courses.

Program outcomes

After completing the program, graduates will:

  • Use computer technology for accounting spreadsheet applications and general ledger accounting functions and demonstrate overall literacy in technology.
  • Develop skills in financial and cost accounting systems common to most businesses.
  • Develop skills in U.S. tax fundamentals.
  • Demonstrate skills and knowledge in auditing.
  • Demonstrate competencies in ethical decision-making.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development.
  • Demonstrate skills in communication, working with others, and critical thinking.

Accounting Major Courses

Accounting Minor

A minor in accounting complements several other majors. It introduces students to the theory and practice of accounting, including the basics of generally accepted accounting principles. The minor has the flexibility to allow a student to concentrate in taxation, cost accounting, auditing, or financial accounting. It may also help you qualify to take the CPA exam.

Program outcomes

After completing the program, graduates will:

  • Understand generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Perform accounting functions based on generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Perform accounting functions using various accounting and tax software.

Prepare for your CPA exam online while earning college credits

The Business Department at the U of M Crookston has teamed up with Gleim CPA Review to offer four CPA Review courses (12 credits) that can be taken online for college credit.

  • ACCT 4511. CPA Review Course-- Regulation (3 cr.)
    Prepares students for Regulation section of CPA exam. prereq: 4405
  • ACCT 4512. CPA Review Course--Financial Reporting and Accounting (3 cr.)
    Prepares students to sit for Financial Reporting/Accounting section of CPA exam. prereq: 4111
  • ACCT 4513. CPA Review Course--Auditing and Attestation (3 cr.)
    Prepares students to sit for Auditing/Attestation section of CPA exam. prereq: 4310
  • ACCT 4514. CPA Review Course--Business Environment and Concepts (3 cr.)
    Prepares students for Business Environment/ Concepts section of CPA exam. prereq: 3322
  • Earned Credits: Credits earned can be applied toward the 150-credit requirement to sit for the CPA exam.
    Note: Many states now require 150 semester credits of education to take the CPA exam or be licensed. Please check with individual state boards of accountancy or accounting faculty who are knowledgeable about this requirement.

Want to become CPA, CIA, or CMA certified?

Upon completion of the 120 credit hour program, a graduate may choose to take certification examinations through our campus to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) (review courses available), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) at a 4-year university instead of being involved within a master’s program. The respective certificates will be issued with the attainment of a satisfactory score and the completion of the appropriate experience.
