If you love pointing out homonyms, synonyms, or any other “nyms,”  you’ve come to the right major.  You’ll have the opportunity to experience career paths such as education, publishing, and communication. With a wide range of literature, writing, communication, and education courses, you’ll be prepared to teach English in grades 5-12. In the classroom, you will play a vital role in shaping the future, creating world citizens focused on the importance of diversity, critical thinking, and effective communication.

English Education is a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree.

An English education degree prepares students to work in public schools at the 5-12 grade levels. Graduates with an English education degree will gain an understanding and appreciation of the English language, education practices, critical thinking, communication, and theoretical application skills, as well as insight into the importance of diversity.

After completing the program, graduates will:

  • Ensure inclusive learning through understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures.
  • Work with others to create an environment that supports collaborative and engaged learning.
  • Demonstrate content knowledge, concepts, and tolls of inquiry in the disciplines/career clusters associated with writing, literature, and communication.
  • Connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving in authentic contexts.
  • Use various assessment tools and practices to monitor learner progress and plan and evaluate effective instruction.
  • Plan instruction that supports all learners in meeting rigorous learning goals within an integrated curriculum.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies that encourage learners to develop a deep understanding of content and make relevant connections.
  • Engage in ethical practices and professional development as a career-long effort and responsibility.

Provide leadership and collaborate with families, school professionals, and community members to support student learning.

English Education Minor

The English Education minor, which is the middle school Communication Arts and Literature (CA&L) Endorsement, allows any teacher education candidate at the University to have the option of earning a middle-level Communication Arts and Literature Endorsement in addition to their professional teaching license. Graduates with an English education minor will gain an understanding and appreciation of the English language, education practices, develop critical thinking, communication, and theoretical application skills, and gain insight into the importance of diversity.

  • The English education degree (Communication Arts and Literature 5-12 Teacher License) is only for students who are pursuing an education degree and who have been accepted into the Teacher Education Unit at U of M Crookston.
  • Learn more about the education program’s accreditation, basic requirements, student teaching, licensure, and much more by visiting our Teacher Education Unit.
  • Be prepared to earn your teacher’s license so that you can secure employment upon graduation.
  • Incorporates literature, writing, communication, and education courses throughout the program.
  • Take writing-intensive courses that will enhance your applied English skills in writing, editing, and research. You will also gain an understanding and appreciation of the English language. 
  • The program consists of communication courses to enhance your skills in speaking, writing, listening, and communication. Obtain skills unique to the humanities, as a large portion of the degree focuses on the field of literature.
  • Gain field-practicum experience, which requires you to practice experiential learning in actual middle and high school classrooms in local schools. Upon graduation, students will have a solid classroom experience to serve as an independent teacher.
