Got a love for theater or music?

At the University, students have several outlets to pursue their interests in music and theater. Faculty and staff are eager to work with students who wish to continue advancing their musical and theater-related talents. Look at the information below for details about how you can get involved.

While the campus does not offer majors in these areas, students can pursue a minor in music. Individual instruction may also be available in some areas.

Band Options

This group is the campus and community concert band. It is comprised of University students who participate as a class for credit (MUS 1051 and MUS 3051), faculty and staff members, and members of the greater Crookston community. This ensemble rehearses weekly on Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium and performs at least one feature concert each semester. It also performs at campus events such as convocation and commencement. All are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring their instrument(s). If they do not have an instrument, one will be located to use. The Crookston Community Band is under the direction of TJ Chapman.

U of M Crookston Jazz Band

This is an auditioned ensemble with priority given to U of M Crookston students, but it is helpful to know about interested players passionate about performing jazz music if the need arises. The group features a jazz combo that performs from time to time as well. Highlights for the U of M Crookston Jazz Band typically include a swing dance, a jingle jazz concert, and a feature concert with a guest artist. Participation is available for credit for students as MUS 1051 and MUS 3052. Audition materials will be provided to interested individuals. The jazz band is under the direction of TJ Chapman.

Golden Eagle Pep Band

This group performs for home volleyball and basketball games throughout the year. All are welcome to play with this group whenever available, including faculty and staff. Participation in this group for U of M Crookston students is not available for class credit. Instead, they are paid for their time. TJ Chapman coordinates the Golden Eagle Pep Band.

Choir Options

U of M Crookston Choir

The U of M Crookston Choir is comprised of students who enjoy rehearsing and performing songs for the campus and community. This group is often part of celebrations on campus, such as convocation, commencement, the Alumni Awards Celebration, and the Torch & Shield Awards Recognition. The group also offers a concert each fall and spring semester. For community service, the U of M Crookston Choir often sings at churches, community gatherings, and service organization events. The choir is under the direction of Associate Professor George French, who heads up activities in both music and theater on campus.

U of M Crookston Pop Choir

The Pop Choir is a new campus club that provides a fun, relaxed setting where students can express themselves through music while refining their musical capabilities. The group tends to work with more contemporary musical selections. Members audition to be part of the club.
