Four faculty members from the University of Minnesota Crookston were named recipients of service awards through the University of Minnesota System in 2024. Faculty from each of U of M Crookston’s departments, Business, Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education (HSSE); Agriculture and Natural Resources (AgNatR), and Math, Science, and Technology (MST), were recognized.

Lecturer and Business Department Chair Kara Bowen, HSSE Professor Soo-Yin Lim-Thompson, and AgNatR Lecturer Margot Rudstrom each received the Award for Excellence in Academic Unit Service and a $500 stipend for professional development or research. MST Lecturer TJ Chapman was one of seven in the U of M System to receive the Provost’s Unit Service Award and a $5,000 stipend.

“We in academic affairs are very excited about UMC's success in this arena,” said Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Rosemary Johnsen.

The 2024 Award for Excellence in Academic Unit Service is described as recognizing exceptional service that has strengthened the functioning and climate of the unit. It is only the second year the award has been distributed and is a collaborative initiative of the U of M’s Provost’s Office and the Faculty Consultative Committee.

The 2024 Provost Unit Service Award is also in its second year of distribution and is said to emphasize and elevate the importance of this type of service to the University’s success. The stipend for this award is to be used for professional development, research, or creative activity, or paid as salary minus taxes and fringe benefits charges.

A celebration for the award winners is planned for the fall.
