Orientation leaders welcomed students to the University of Minnesota Crookston last weekend to kick off a new academic year. Summer brought updates across campus in preparation for fall semester, which begins Tuesday, August 27, 2019.

Highlights include

Approval was received for the addition of a new undergraduate minor in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, effective in spring 2020, on campus as well as for delivery online.  The minor consists of courses designed to provide students with both the technical background and the theoretical background giving them a competitive edge in cybersecurity jobs.

The campus was selected as one of just 80 institutions in the country named by the Center for First- Generation College Student Success as a "First Forward" institution. With the launch of a student success division on campus, Lamesha Brown was hired as the new director of Student Success and Academic Advising. (https://www.crk.umn.edu/news/firstforward)

Beginning with fall 2020 admission, students applying to the University of Minnesota Crookston will be reviewed using a new holistic admissions process that includes the option not to submit your standardized ACT or SAT test scores.

The Office of Admissions launched their podcast “Flying In with the Golden Eagles.” The podcast, hosted by students, includes tips and tricks for new and future students. Students at the University of Minnesota Crookston (UMN Crookston) have been using laptops for 26 years and issuing of a new model began this week on campus. The laptop initiative started in 1993 when UMN Crookston became the first higher education institution to issue laptop computers to all on-campus students and faculty. (https://www.crk.umn.edu/news/new-laptops)

The University of Minnesota Crookston has again been named one of the best colleges in the Midwest according to The Princeton Review, a nationally known education services company.  The UMN Crookston is one of 158 institutions The Princeton Review recommends in its "Best Midwestern" section of its website feature, "2020 Best Regional Colleges: Region by Region.” (https://www.crk.umn.edu/news/princeton-review)

The University of Minnesota Crookston athletic department and Chancellor Mary Holz-Clause announced the addition of men's and women's cross country as a NCAA Division II sport, and trap as a competitive club sport to begin competition during the 2019-20 athletic season. Looking ahead

Homecoming 2019 will take place September 27 and 28. Plan to attend the Alumni Awards Celebration on Friday, September 27 honoring Justin McMechan 2009, recipient of the Abbey Award , and Outstanding Alumni recipients Victoria Ramierz 2002, Perry Schermerhorn 1979 and 2017, and Paul Carrier 1987 and 1997.
