CROOKSTON, Minn. - Many University of Minnesota Crookston students, faculty, and staff banded together with the rest of the Crookston community Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24 to help protect Crookston from severe flooding. The Red Lake River water levels rose dramatically beginning Thursday evening, following severe weather on Thursday and Friday. The river impacted several low-lying areas, and even broke through the levee Sunday at Riverside Ave. The flood began cresting Monday, April 25 during the morning at a level of 27.07 feet, below the projected 28.5 feet and below record levels. The flood protection system in Crookston reaches 31 feet. The work from the community helped to protect buildings such as the Crookston Library, and structures in and around the Red Lake River.
Notices were sent out on campus on Saturday and Sunday to faculty, staff, and students to help with the sandbagging efforts, and they answered the call.
