University of Minnesota Crookston student, Katherine Hills, recently represented Wright County in the 2023 Princess Kay of the Milky Way competition. Hills had her likeness carved out of butter and Hills' sculpture was put on display alongside the other contestants' sculptures at the 2023 Minnesota State Fair.

"Katherine Hills is the daughter of Karl Hills and Nicole Hills. She attends the University of Minnesota Crookston where she studies Animal Science and Equine Science with a Pre-Veterinary Emphasis. Her involvement in the dairy industry began on her grandparents’ dairy farm where she would help with chores when she was younger. Her favorite memory on the farm is all the fun and conversations that were had during milking. Aside from dairy farming, she enjoys reading and country swing dancing! Katherine’s favorite way to advocate for the dairy industry is through community events like Breakfast on the Farm! Because of the support from her Grandpa Allen, family, and friends, she decided to run for Princess Kay and is excited to have her head carved in butter!" - Midwest Dairy

In regards to her butter sculpture, Hills told Minnesota State Fair representatives, “Jalyssa, who is from the same county, and I plan to host a potato feed with the butter from our butter sculptures! We want to invite friends, family, and our community to join us!”

Other finalists in the competition included this year's winner, Emma Kuball, who attends the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Makenzie Alberts, Gracie Ash, Jalyssa Beaudry, Katherine Hills, Montana Krueger, Megan Ratka, Anne Simpson, Josephine Sutherland, and Riley Ward.

Dairy princess programs provide a way for young women to be involved in the dairy industry, creating dairy advocates and community leaders, says Midwest Dairy. The winner of the Princess Kay of the Milky Way competition will serve as a goodwill ambassador for Minnesota's dairy farmers. Midwest Dairy sponsors the Princess Kay of the Milky Way program, which is funded by dairy farmers through their promotion checkoff.
