In September 2022, Marah Mcdougal landed in London to study for a semester through the CAPA Global Education program. In addition to taking five business classes, the 2022 University of Minnesota Crookston (UMC) Student of the Year has been exploring the city and other major European destinations, such as Paris and Barcelona, Spain.

Soon after she arrived, she witnessed history with the passing of Queen Elizabeth II and coronation of King Charles III.

“We stood in line to see the casket drive by,” she said. “It was a cool experience and it was also a sad experience just to know you're coming to a country right when the queen dies.”

A marketing major, Mcdougal says meeting people, learning about international business, exploring the culture, seeing the politics and economics at work, and enduring transportation strikes have been “a rollercoaster.”

But the experience has helped her learn about herself personally and professionally.

“It's really gratifying to know how different industries work in different countries,” shared Mcdougal, who has received multiple scholarships including the University of Minnesota Scholarship in honor of George Floyd. “I’ve also learned [the importance of] being open-minded … taking time for yourself to figure out what you really want to do and what makes you happy.”
