University of Minnesota Crookston Office of Outreach and Engagement in conjunction with a financial gift from Pine Lake Wild Rice will host a series of after school events in Crookston and the surrounding school districts.

Ag in the Classroom kicks off at Crookston’s School District # 593 at Highland Elementary School January 13, 23, 27 and February 6, 10 (and 13 if needed) from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Ag in the Classroom will share and deliver to more than 50 middle school students the understanding of one’s food and fiber system. Students will gain a stronger appreciation of agriculture and discover career pathways in agriculture and the food industry. This program is possible thanks to Pine Lake Wild Rice Farm with a commitment to increase awareness of science, agriculture and sustainability including food-security.

The goal of this after-school program is to increase agricultural literacy in K-12 education through Minnesota’s Ag In the Classroom. Supported by UMN Crookston’s Office of Outreach & Engagement and PLWR this after-school program is free. Students in Crookston will experience one day (5 weeks) a week events, by applying authentic, agricultural-based content as the context to teach core curriculum concepts in science, social studies, language arts and nutrition. Through the delivery and understanding of one’s food and fiber system students will gain a stronger appreciation of agriculture and discover career pathways.

Districts interested in learning more may contact Michelle Christopherson, Director of Outreach and Engagement, mchristo@umn.edu.
