Mahatma Gandhi’s nonviolent resistance in India inspired civil rights movements around the world. In commemoration of the 150thanniversary of his birth, the University of Minnesota Crookston invited students in grades 1-12 to participate in an essay, poetry, and/or art contest.
The contest was designed to encourage thoughtful consideration around nonviolent resistance. Students addressed topics through original artwork, poetry, and essays. A panel of judges from the campus and community reviewed the submissions and selected the winning entries.
Contest winners included:
First place poetry Nikolas “Nik” Gardin from Underwood High School. Madison Johnson earned second place honors in poetry with her submission. She is also from Underwood High School.
First place in the art category was a drawing by Lillian Olson from Herman Norcross School.
