Meet Crookston Through Service

For Students

Before classes event start, you will begin to meet your new community through a service event called “Meet Crookston through Service.” In addition to learning where you can later volunteer, you also find out where the local attractions, churches, and schools are located.

For Community Partners

As part of New Student Orientation, students are introduced to Crookston through a program called “Meet Crookston through Service” before classes even start. Students help prepare elementary school classrooms, clear cross-country ski trails, trim trees at local parks, clean kennels and walk dogs at the humane society, assist with building Habitat Houses, make apple pies with residents of an assisted living center, prepare playground surfaces, wash windows and do other maintenance work at local churches, pack boxes at the food bank, assist with work at historical museums, and many other projects. During this morning of service, staff members photograph the activities and produce a slideshow, which is viewed during the reflection dinner later that evening. Community partners share in the dinner celebration, and students learn about many community opportunities. Students feel a sense of accomplishment as they work with a group of new friends whom they might not otherwise work with in this unique setting. A great deal of work in the community gets done.
