A new open-access book called “Power of One: Theories, Strategies and Case Studies in Internationalizing the Student Experience” featuring several University of Minnesota Crookston faculty members was recently published by the University of Minnesota Libraries. The book was edited by U of M Crookston Associate Professor Katy Chapman, Ph.D. and includes submissions by Chapman, Professor Joseph Shostell, Ph.D., Assistant Professor Al Fattal Anas, Ph.D., and Associate Professor Brian Dingmann, Ph.D.

This collection demonstrates the ‘Power of One’ – one teacher, one researcher, one administrator – to make change on their campus and to make change in the hearts and minds of our students, says the U of M Libraries. It shares success stories in developing programs, redesigning courses, and building a better tomorrow through international education.

The book is now available to read online as an e-book or to download as a PDF at https://open.lib.umn.edu/powerofone/, and is free to read, adapt, and re-use for educational and other non-commercial purposes. Print copies will also be available for purchase.

“It was inspiring to see how educators in higher education from a wide range of disciplines recognized the importance of international and intercultural learning and implemented a wide variety of innovative techniques to ensure their students were not only exposed to these ideas but immersed in them!” Chapman exclaimed. “I hope that this collection will inspire other educators to incorporate international and intercultural learning into their courses.”

The “Power of One” honors the legacy of Gayle Woodruff, the founding director of curriculum and campus internationalization for the University of Minnesota system, who retired in 2021. Woodruff founded the Mestenhauser Legacy Initiative and the Internationalizing the Curriculum and Campus conference, and co-founded the Internationalizing Teaching and Learning Faculty Cohort Program, a transformative faculty retreat which brought co-editors Chapman and David Beard, Ph.D., a professor of rhetoric at U of M Duluth, together to serve as mentors.

Chapters of the book include overviews of undergraduate research study abroad programs with partners in Morocco, South Africa, and Brazil, and address the establishment of a professional learning community for the internationalization of higher education, a systemwide release explains. Contributions speak to how international education can enhance curriculum across disciplines as diverse as biology, communication, marketing, and other fields. U of M Crookston related chapters include “Marketing Across Cultures” (Al-Fattal) and “Lessons Learned Internationalizing the Environmental Sciences and Biology Programs at the University of Minnesota Crookston” (Chapman, Dingmann, and Shostell.)
