Dreaming of one day becoming a sports writer, media specialist, or sports researcher and analyst? The University of Minnesota Crookston is proud to announce it now offers a bachelor’s degree in sport media and communication, offering students a cutting-edge program designed to prepare them for careers in the rapidly evolving sports industry. The program combines a strong foundation in media, communication, and digital technologies with a deep understanding of sports culture, providing students with the skills necessary to excel in sports journalism, broadcasting, public relations, and content creation. This innovative offering reflects the university's commitment to meeting the demands of an increasingly dynamic field and helping students achieve success in a wide range of sport-related careers. The new program will be available both on campus and online.

Offered as both a major and a minor under the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Education Department, sport media and communication provides a landscape of the sports industry using established and contemporary approaches. The program is designed to strengthen and develop interviewing skills, storytelling, editing, and audio and multimedia production, plus it utilizes public relations tactics to analyze and present data to members of the audience. Courses will allow students to develop strong communication skills desired by employers and they’ll gain practical, real-world experience in the field through internships and student work opportunities.

“We’re especially excited to provide an opportunity for students who are sports enthusiasts to develop the skills needed to work in the field, regardless of athletic ability, when they choose sport media and communication as their major or minor,” Associate Professor of Communication Megan Bell exclaimed. “Enjoying sports and having a desire to communicate about them has the potential to make this program a great fit for athletes and non-athletes alike.”

After completing the program, graduates will be able to:

  • Apply professional presentation skills in the development of visual, verbal, and written content
  • Employ appropriate technology for the purpose and audience within the context of the sport media and communication field
  • Apply established and contemporary media strategies
  • Demonstrate an understanding of public relations and/or marketing communication strategies as they relate to the sport media and communication field
