Sarah VelasquezSarah Velasquez is from Chino, California, where she grew up with her sister, Amanda, and parents, Tony and Maria Velasquez. She played softball throughout her childhood, and played four years of varsity softball and tennis in high school. Velasquez discovered UMN Crookston when she was offered a softball scholarship, and was ultimately drawn here by the great academics UMC has to offer. After playing one year of softball as a Golden Eagle, Velasquez was also offered a tennis scholarship.

Velasquez is very proud to come from a large, loving, Mexican American family. Her grandparents were born in Mexico, and both of her parents were born in California. Sarah’s parents worked hard to help her get to where she is today, and they’re very proud of all that she’s accomplished. Velasquez’s hard work has allowed her to be a Division II athlete while also maintaining a 4.0 GPA, which resulted in her earning a place on the Chancellor’s List last semester.

To Velasquez, celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month means celebrating and embracing Mexican culture.

“We are very full of culture and are welcoming to all who would like to hear our stories,” said Velasquez.
