Eighteen students from across the University of Minnesota System recently returned from a 10-day study abroad experience in London and Paris, which focused on exploring global perspectives in business, technology, and innovation. The trip was hosted by UMN Crookston May 4–14, 2025, and was open to students from all five UMN campuses including online learners.

This opportunity brought together students from different academic backgrounds to learn in two of Europe’s most spirited cities. The itinerary combined academic activities with cultural immersion and offered students a look at how business and technology operate internationally.

Students observed economic activity and consumer behavior at local market attractions such as the Borough Market in London and Marché des Enfants Rouges in Paris. Similarly, a visit to the Museum of Brands in London provided historical insights into 200 years of consumer culture, advertising, and product design.

Another academic highlight was a visit to Amazon London headquarters, where students met with company leaders to discuss global topics such as the future of work, personal branding, and emerging trends in the digital economy. Students and Amazon leadership talked about workplace differences among countries and the importance of social media platform LinkedIn.

“This Study Abroad trip to London and Paris provided students with an opportunity to broaden their global business perspective,” said Courtney Bergman, UMN Crookston lecturer and faculty leader. “By experiencing these two cities, which are significant economic and cultural hubs, students gained a deeper understanding of international markets and cross-cultural communication and experienced firsthand the different cultures.”

Other endeavors included a behind-the-scenes tour at Warner Bros. Studios for the Harry Potter experience and a visit to the Chelsea Football Club in London.

“The trip provided students with insights into business and technology in these two cities, while allowing them to explore the unique cultures and iconic landmarks,” added Rachel Lundbohm, UMN Crookston associate professor and faculty leader. “The learning that took place during this study abroad trip is something that cannot be replicated in a classroom.”

Students also enjoyed guided cultural tours of the London Eye, the Changing of the Guard, the Tower of London, and a double-decker bus tour. In Paris, they explored world-famous attractions like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, and took in the city’s charm via a hop-on/hop-off bus tour. Travel between cities included a journey through the popular Chunnel, an undersea railway tunnel connecting England to France.

For many students, the academic experience was enriched by meaningful cultural exchange and personal growth.

“The trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will remember forever,” shared Clara Hanson, UMN Crookston student who recently graduated with a degree in English and marketing. “It was both fun and enriching to immerse ourselves in the new cultures.”

“Studying abroad with the University of Minnesota Crookston provided me with lifelong experiences that I wouldn't get at any other university,” stated Irelyn Spencer, UMN Crookston junior majoring in health science. “Traveling abroad is educational in itself, but being able to do it with professors who are so hands-on and a group of students who wanted to learn as much as I did was amazing.”

While the academic and professional opportunities were a major highlight, the trip also allowed plenty of time for students to enjoy each city on their terms. Students were given a full free day to explore London, with many visiting additional landmarks such as Westminster Abbey, Kensington Palace, and the Camden Market, while others explored neighborhoods, shopped, or relaxed in local parks.

In Paris, students visited historic sites, browsed boutiques and shops, and enjoyed the city’s cafe culture. Many students also gained confidence navigating international public transit systems by using the London Tube and Paris Metro.

The blend of structured learning, cultural immersion, and personal exploration made the trip a well-rounded experience. For many, it was not just about business and technology. It was about expanding worldviews, building connections, and making memories that will last a lifetime.

Students at UMN Crookston have the chance to explore exciting study abroad programs and travel opportunities offered each year. The campus also hosts a Study Abroad Club, which supports students through fundraising and preparation for their trips. New travel programs are announced throughout the year, and students are encouraged to sign up and take part.
