Nursing Home Administrator Certificate
Available as
Lead Organizations in the field of Long-Term Care Services
The Nursing Home Administrator (NHA) online Certificate program prepares individuals for the regulatory and business principles of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health services, and other long-term care services. The certificate content consists of courses required for the state of Minnesota licensure and preparation for the National Association of Nursing Home Administrator Board (NAB) exam to become a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator (LNHA). The certificate courses reside within the Health Management program, accredited by the Minnesota Board of Executives for Long Term Services and Supports (BELTSS). Every state requires nursing home administrators to be licensed. Minnesota and most other states require candidates to have at least a Bachelor's degree, prior to or during the completion of the required certificate courses. Once licensed, individuals are qualified to lead organizations in the field of long-term care (LTC) services.

What are the admission requirements for the certificate?
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning or in tandem with the completion of a degree from the University of Minnesota system.
How do I apply?
Complete your UMN Crookston application and submit an official transcript showing your completed Bachelor's degree.
If I haven't completed a Bachelors degree, can I enroll in one at UMN Crookston? If so, do I need to take these classes as well?
Yes, we encourage students to complete our Bachelor of Science in Health Management. The certificate courses are required within a Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare Management so no additional coursework is necessary to complete the certificate program.
I have a Bachelor's degree in a non-healthcare field already. How many additional classes do I need to become a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator (LNHA)?
The National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) lists the accredited colleges and additional information that leads to the Health Services Executive (HSE) and Licensed Nursing Home Administrator (LNHA) credential.
If I live in another state, can I also complete the Long Term Care Certificate program for my state?
Faculty work with the student to meet the particular course and AIT requirements for their preferred state of licensure.
How long will it take to get my nursing home license?
If you already have a Bachelor's degree, it may take two to three semesters to complete the requirement for taking a state and national board exam.
